3 Ways to Fix Your Ford Side Mirror

Are you a Ford owner with a broken side mirror? Your first instinct might be to go out and replace the entire assembly. The good news is that there are easier and cheaper alternatives. We think these alternatives are worth exploring first before deciding to replace the assembly.

1. Replace the Mirror Glass

If your mirror glass is the only component that’s broken, you can easily replace it. First, you want to make sure that the rest of the assembly is in good working order. To do this:

  1. Physically inspect the side mirror housing for cracks. Don’t forget to check the underside of the housing.
  2. Move your mirror with your hands (only if you don’t have powered mirrors) or via your power mirror controls.

If the rest of the assembly appears to be working fine, then you can buy an OEM replacement side mirror glass and then replace it yourself.

2. Replace the Mirror Housing

Is your mirror housing the only component that’s broken? You might be able to replace just the housing, but not without checking the assembly first. When the housing is cracked, dirt and moisture get inside and may affect the internal components. So if you want to replace just the housing, check the assembly first by playing around with the controls if you have powered mirrors. Or gently push it around with your hands if you don’t have powered mirrors.

3. Paint the Mirror Housing

If your mirror glass is fine and your housing is just scratched up without any cracks or holes, then painting the housing is a good solution. You can fill in the scratches and then paint it. You don’t even need to remove the cover from the car.

What if You Need to Replace the Entire Mirror Assembly?

If all three of the options above aren’t going to cut it, then replacing the entire assembly is the best solution. If your side mirror glass and housing are the only components that are broken, it might seem possible to replace both components. But it’s actually not a good solution. When the housing is broken, the inner components are exposed to dirt and moisture.

Don't waste money on a glass and housing replacement only to find out that something inside the assembly is broken. Instead, buy an OEM replacement assembly and replace the whole thing. It’s the safer and easier option.
